GTA 6 pre-load begins on November 10, 2026, nine days before Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games confirmed the date on November 3, and the PlayStation Blog added the number every PS5 owner needs to know: clear at least 212 GB of storage before the download starts.

That is a very large install for a console game, so the practical message is simple: if you pre-ordered digitally, start making room now.

GTA 6 pre-load date and time on PS5 and Xbox

The start time depends on your console. According to Rockstar Support, the two platforms handle it differently:

  • PS5: pre-loading opens at midnight local time on November 10, in each player's own time zone.
  • Xbox Series X|S: pre-loading opens at the same moment worldwide, 12:00 a.m. GMT on November 10. That is 7 p.m. ET and 4 p.m. PT on November 9 in the US, and 9 p.m. on November 9 in Brasília.

Pre-loading is for players who pre-ordered the game. It does not unlock the game early: GTA 6 still launches on November 19, and the pre-load only means the files are already on your console when that moment arrives.

GTA 6 file size: how much space you need

Sony's post tells PS5 owners to free a minimum of 212 GB before pre-downloading. Rockstar's support page describes the requirement as up to 212 GB depending on the device, so the exact number may vary between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

To put that in perspective, a standard PS5 has an SSD of around 825 GB or 1 TB, and a slice of that is reserved for the system software. GTA 6 alone can take a big share of what is left, which means many players will need to delete or move other games first.

How to make sure the GTA 6 pre-load starts automatically

Rockstar lists a few settings to check so the download begins on its own, even if you are asleep or at work when it unlocks:

  • PS5: enable automatic downloads and leave the console on or in Rest Mode.
  • Xbox Series X|S: enable automatic updates and leave the console on or in Sleep mode.
  • Both: make sure the pre-order is tied to the account you use on the console and that the storage space is already free.

If you still need room, our guide on how to free up space on PS5 explains how to delete or move games, what can and cannot be played from a USB drive, and what you need to add an M.2 SSD.

What this means for players

The 212 GB figure confirms what many expected: GTA 6 is a huge game, and storage will be the first hurdle for a lot of console owners on launch week. Pre-loading avoids the worst-case scenario of starting a download of that size on November 19, when servers and home connections will be under heavy pressure.

It also matters for anyone on the fence about which edition to buy. Pre-orders are still open, and if you are deciding between versions, our GTA 6 Standard vs Ultimate guide breaks down the differences.

What comes next

The timeline is now set: pre-loading on November 10 and launch on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC version. Sony's post also says more details will follow, so release-day information could still be added before launch.

Until then, the best use of the next few days is freeing space and checking your download settings. If you missed Rockstar's most recent look at the game, our breakdown of the GTA 6 launch trailer covers what it shows of Vice City, Jason and Lucia.
