The Pikmin 4 Switch 2 Edition is getting a free demo on November 2, ten days before the full release on November 12. Nintendo revealed the date in a surprise Pikmin Day Direct posted on October 31, in which Shigeru Miyamoto declared November 1 an official yearly holiday for the series.

There was no new Pikmin game in the roughly nine-minute presentation. Instead, Nintendo used it to push the Switch 2 upgrade of its 2023 hit, launch an animated short series and tease a big update for the mobile game Pikmin Bloom.

What's in the Pikmin 4 Switch 2 Edition demo

The demo goes live on the Nintendo eShop on Monday, November 2. Based on what Nintendo showed, it includes the opening part of the story, set in the Sunspeckled Terrace area, plus a taste of the new Dandori Academy mode. Coverage of the Direct also mentions Dandori Battle being playable.

Two details matter if you plan to buy. According to the official Pikmin 4 store page, demo save data carries over to the full game, and finishing the demo unlocks a reward code for an Oatchi-themed costume in Pikmin Bloom (a Nintendo Account is required).

Pikmin 4 Switch 2 Edition: release date, upgrade and new features

Nintendo first announced Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy in September. Here is what has been confirmed so far:

  • Release date: November 12, 2026, on Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Voice commands: you can give orders to Oatchi, and praise him, using the console's built-in microphone.
  • Upgrade pack: owners of the original Switch version can upgrade instead of buying again. The pack has been reported at $9.99 in the U.S. and £7.99 in the U.K.; check your regional eShop for the final price.
  • Visuals: Nintendo promises improved visuals on Switch 2 but has not published full resolution or frame rate targets.

How Pikmin 4's Dandori Academy works

Dandori Academy is the main new content. Per Nintendo's announcement, it is a score-attack mode where you collect treasure as fast as possible. Exams run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with one scored attempt, while the rest of the week works as practice time.

The mode has three difficulty levels, medals to earn and 72 stages that will be released over time. Friends and global leaderboards require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, which is sold separately.

Pikmin Day: Hello! Pikmin shorts and Pikmin Bloom Secret Caves

Miyamoto explained the date with a visual joke: the red, blue and yellow Pikmin from the first game, lined up, look like "11.1". Nintendo plans to celebrate it every year from now on.

The Direct also premiered Hello! Pikmin, a series of animated shorts made with Nintendo Pictures. The first episode is already out, more arrive in November, and new shorts will release monthly starting in December through the Nintendo Today! app.

On mobile, Pikmin Bloom is getting Secret Caves, underground areas with big treasure rewards and a real risk of losing Pikmin. They are due this winter, and completing Dandori Academy exams in the Switch 2 Edition will unlock special cave maps in the app.

What it means for players

If you already own Pikmin 4 on Switch, the upgrade pack is the cheap way in, and your progress stays with you. If you never played it, the demo is the safest test: your save moves to the full game, so nothing is lost by starting on November 2.
